News from the Palm Reader camp comes thick and fast. Last week the boys confirmed they would be part of Download Festival 2013 on the Pepsi Max Stage.

The band’s album “Bad Weather” is also now available for pre-order from our web store http://smalltownrecords.bigcartel.com where we have two exclusive tshirt bundles or you can pick up the album as a stand alone product. The first 50 orders come with hand numbered and signed album artwork prints.

So, the gents in Palm Reader are busy chaps. Their new single ‘Noble Host’, the first to be taken from the debut album BAD WEATHER will be released on Monday, March 18th.

Metallers With One Last Breath (WOLB) have recently joined us at Small Town Records so SmallTownEmily sat down for a cup of tea and a good old natter with WOLB bassist Joe Lancaster, to discuss the release of their upcoming EP!

Hi Joe, tell us about the release of your EP on February 25th. What’s it called and what can WOLB fans expect to hear?
Hey Emily! The EP ‘Wake the dead’ that’s being released on the 25th is a re-recorded version of the EP released years ago. I wasn’t in the band when the first one was released so after writing, touring and a lot of drinking we knew it had be beefed up and modernised into that we have now.

Give us a brief history of your band, for those who are new to your music.
Well I was a cheeky fucker and jumped in after the former bassist left haha! As a band we have dug deep to get where we are. We went through a phase which every band goes through where we tried to sound like our favourite band only shitter haha but we then broke through that stage and listened to a wide range of different music, even including jazz! It seemed to flick a switch in the Graves brothers head and that’s what gives us the sound we have!

So who are your current favourite UK Metal band and why?
With One Last Breath cause I’m part of it haha! If I have to choose I’d say While she sleeps. Fellow Yorkshire metallers that have worked incredibly hard to get where they are now and they are fucking killing it!

…And (just for fun) favourite mainstream artist? (for example, I (regrettably) quite enjoy a bit of Conor Maynard…sorry everyone)
Celine Dion! Have you seen the titanic?!

You boys are off on tour in April with Adept and Despite My Deepest Fear. Are you looking forward to the shows? Any surprises in there for fans?
I cannot wait for this tour, it’s going to be unreal! I see tours as adventures, I never know what’s going to happen next! I know Adept and Despite my deepest fear are insane so I cannot wait to see what shenanigans we get up to on and off the stage haha!

Which track is your favourite from the new EP?
Burn out the flame, it’s got so much more balls than the previous ‘Before you go’.

Best music-related moment you’ve ever had ever?
Signing the copies of our new EP a few hours ago! Also being back stage on tour with AA and meeting Charlie Watts the drummer from The Rolling Stones! It’s all been insane!

Woking based band Palm Reader, describe their musical genre as ‘lairy’, we caught up with PR vocalist Josh to discuss music, DIY ethics and Valentines day!

Josh, vocalist of Palm Reader, hello! Welcome to the Small Town Family! We’re thrilled to have you aboard! On a scale of 1-Stoked, how stoked are you for your album to be released?

Too excited for words or numbers!

What’s the album title and what can fans expect from it?

The album title is Bad Weather. As a band, we like to think we’ve done something that people wouldn’t really expect. There are quite a few things on this album that we’ve never done before, we pushed ourselves.

You’re about to embark on a tour with your friends Polar. I see you’re playing a show on Valentines day, do you have any romantic plans after the show? Or will it be a lonely night of Jagermeister and Pornography?

Yeah, we leave tomorrow. We’re really looking forward to these dates, Polar. are good friends of ours and for some fucking stupid reason we’ve never been on tour with them! As for romantic plans? I’ve got my sights set on Woody (vocals) from Polar.

As you’re new to the #SmallTownFamily we should explain a little about the roots of Palm Reader. How long have you boys been a band for?

Palm Reader started in early 2011. We’ve done nothing but work our balls off to do what we want with our lives since then. In other words, we haven’t taken the easy route. That’s what we’re about. We’re reading our own palms. We’ve played a fuck-bunch of unforgettable shows with some incredbile bands, we’ve recorded and released a self-titled ep, played more shows, done a few videos and toured a fair amount too.

We’re just excited to push things further/as far as they can go.

Who was your childhood musical hero?

I’d say Michael Jackson. Fuck the piss-takers, I don’t think anyone can deny the impact he’s had on music.

Best thing about being in a band? And worst thing about being in a band?

Best thing: I get to do the only thing I’ve ever wanted to do with four of the most rad people I know.

Worst thing: realising that sometimes that’s the only good thing.

Belgium - Feb 2013

This weekend just gone I was invited by Danny from Shadows Chasing Ghosts to Belgium to watch a band he has just taken on for management play a show in Antwerp. The ever lovely Marianne Harris would also be joining us and documenting the Now Voyager show for Monster Energy. I dug out my passport, packed a bag and headed South.

After a quick lunch with Danny and Holly Raven (SCG’s manager), we met Mar and headed for Dover in Danny’s recently acquired Ford Focus estate, (previously owned by the legendary John Mitchell) As you would expect from three music industry obsessives, the aux cable was passed around and we each showed off our respective exclusives and recommendations….

Upon arriving in Calais, Mar set the sat nav and we were on our way to meet Now Voyager in Brussels. What we didn’t realise until the sat nav confirmed our arrival was that Mar had set the wrong postcode, so we were in fact 50 minutes in the wrong direction. Beef over, we headed to the RIGHT address, finally arriving around 2am. It was time for a quick cup of tea and off to bed.

Saturday was the day of show, and plenty of activity. We headed off early to NV’s rehearsal room as they packed their equipment into the van and drove to Antwerp. Mar was filming as much as she could and once the band were ready to soundcheck we disappeared off for some food to let the band prepare. Whilst in a small Belgian cafe, Mar busted out some of her fluent French, which transpired to be basic French phrases with English words spoken loudly and intermittently. Love you Mar!

The show itself was a cracker, great packed out venue, plenty of wonderful Belgian beer and topped with an excellent performance from Now Voyager. It was great to see Jef, from Noize Agency and his lovely lady, and discuss a bit of business and hear what they have been up to since I last saw them at Hevy 2012.

Eventually, we nearly 2 hours after the curfew, we were thrown out of the venue, returning to Brussels for a greasy takeaway and then to bed.

Sunday, we awoke with the long journey home ahead of us. 2 hours to Calais, a very rough boat crossing, with a 30 minute docking delay, and then straight in to the British snow,sleet, rain, and extreme gales from South to North. Eventually I made it back to the North around 9.30pm after near on 11 hours on the road.

It was worth it though. Great music, great laughs with great people. Sometimes this industry can throw a lot of shit your way, but its the odd weekend where some wonderful memories are made, that make it worth it. Thanks to Danny for inviting me and all the driving, thanks to Mar for the laughs and looking after me when i was turning fifty shades of green on the boat home and thanks to Now Voyager for a great show and putting us up for two nights.

Monster will be posting the Now Voyager documentary soon, i’m sure Mar will have lots of great footage soon for you all to see.
